Volcanoes to beach, Leon, Nicaragua

Chilling by the waves

León is a pretty but quiet colonial town with colourful architecture that is similar to Antigua and Granada.

It is a gateway to Nicaragua’s stunning North West, the endless beautiful surf coastline which is just 20 minutes drive away, and nearby volcanoes.

Few visit León without trying the volcano boarding, an exhilarating adrenalin rush down Volcano Cerro Negro, kitted out in bright orange clothing to protect from the high speed crashes. At $30 for just one ride down, it is a little on the steep side.

To get up close to wide nature, Volcano Telica offers a chance to see magma bubbling up inside the crater.

Just a 20 minute bus ride from León is the beautiful Las Penitas. Learn to surf on nearby Los Brasiles Island and stay at the perfect beach hostel, Surfing Turtle Lodge.
