Diving Isla Mujeres, Mexico
A gorgeous island just a 20 minute boat ride from Cancun. It has lovely beaches, stunning water, a laid back feel and is minus the high rise developments and tacky tourist attractions of Cancun.
I came to dive on the Museo Subacuatico De Arte (MUSA) or Underwater Museum of Art. Created between 2009 and 2013, large statues and other sculptures have been sunk off the island to create the art museum.
It aims to attract divers away from nearby struggling reefs and has succeeded in becoming an attraction in itself. Visibility was good and there was something eerie and wonderful about this dive. At less than 10 metres, dive operators are allowing people to do “trial dives” on the site.
Accommodation: Poc Na Hostel. Located on the beach, it has a beach bar and includes free daily Yoga and a basic breakfast of toast and coffee. This party hostel is the only backpackers on the island. There is no kitchen and it could be much cleaner.
Dive Operator: Mundaca Divers. Two dives for US$78 including kit. Avoid Poc Na’s dive outfit, unless you wish to become lost.
